Igor MITORAJ (1944-2014)
Studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow in the studio of Tadeusz Kantor. Since the 1970s, he lived and worked mainly in Italy, first in Pietrasanta and later in Carrara-places famous for their sculptural traditions.His work drew inspiration from mythology and ancient art, especially Greco-Roman, but depicted mutilated, fragmented figures, often with their eyes closed, which is interpreted as a reflection on human frailty, memory and the passage of time. Mitoraj worked mainly in bronze and marble, creating both intimate sculptures and monumental outdoor projects. His works have been exhibited in the world's most important museums and public spaces, including the Louvre, the British Museum, the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa and Krakow's Main Square. The artist passed away on October 6, 2014 in Paris, leaving behind a body of work that has become a permanent part of the history of modern sculpture.
