He had no fine arts training and was a naive painter, creating out of pure talent and the need to capture the world around him. The subjects of his works were images of saints, portraits of patients, architecture, views of cities, villas and boarding houses, railway stations. Nikifor is described as an open-air painter. However, he did not strive to reflect reality realistically, but to show it through his own eyes. In doing so, he possessed an extraordinary intuition for color.
