Adolf Gustav Schweitzer
Adolf Gustav Schweitzer was born in Dessau on April 19, 1847. In 1867 he began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf under landscape painters Oswald Achenbach and Eugen Dücker. He took part in the Franco-Prussian War in 1970-1971, which influenced his works created during this period. Schweitzer specialized in landscape painting, and particularly enjoyed painting winter landscapes. He made several study trips in his career - he traveled in Germany, visited France and Belgium. He regularly traveled to Norway, where he included views of Norwegian fjords in his paintings.
Schweitzer had been exhibiting his works since 1872. His paintings appeared at exhibitions in Dresden, Hanover, Vienna, Düsseldorf and Bremen. He also participated in the Exhibitions of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. One of his clients was Kaiser Wilhelm II, who was said to have been an admirer of Norwegian landscapes - he spent 4 months a year at sea, and Norway was the most common place for his imperial visits. He died in 1914 in Düsseldorf.
