Woodcuts, paper, 24 x 18 cm (inside the mat); signed in pencil by the artist in the lower right corner: “S. Raczyński.”
Stanisław Raczyński (1903–1982) was a painter, printmaker, and set designer. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in 1926. He continued his studies at universities in Paris and Italy. His artistic output consists mainly of woodcuts, though he also worked in graphic design, commercial art, and illustration. He most often tackled figurative and architectural themes (numerous woodcuts depicting St. Mary’s Basilica in Kraków), which he rendered in a decorative style. In 1927–28, he worked as a set designer at the Popular Theater in Kraków, and for the next two years in the same capacity at the Grand Theater in Poznań. In 1930, he traveled to Paris on a scholarship from the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Education.
