Biography
Maria Wegrzyniak-Szczepkowska (born 1954) is a visual artist and historian of philosophy, known for her unique approach to contemporary textile art. Her distinctive, original tapestries combine traditional weaving techniques with innovative use of unusual materials, such as recycled materials, paper, cables and clothing items. Thanks to her original technical solutions and pertinent subject matter, her works have won recognition at many art competitions. In 2015, the artist was awarded in three prestigious competitions: MUZA 2015 - Magdalena Abakanowicz Competition, 5th National Art Competition and Tapestry of the Year Competition. In 2017, she was a finalist in the international YICCA Contest in Rome. Her works have also been presented at the Biennale of Artistic Tapestry in Skierniewice (2016, 2018), as well as during numerous solo exhibitions, including in Warsaw galleries: "Piecowa" Gallery (2016), "Pogodna" Center for Creative Activities (2017) and "On the Right Side of the Vistula" Gallery (2019), where she presented an exhibition titled Significant Threads. She also participated in the group exhibition 8 Women at the Conductor House in Częstochowa (2018).
