Józef Ryszkiewicz (father) (1856–1925)—Polish painter. He studied painting at the Drawing Class in Warsaw (under the guidance of Wojciech Gerson and Cyprian Lachnicki), and continued his studies from 1875 at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg in Bogdan Willewald’s studio of battle painting. He supplemented his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Sandor Wagner (in early November 1879, he enrolled in the Academy’s Techn. Malklasse). After returning to Warsaw, he served on the board of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, and from 1900 to 1912 he was president of the Warsaw Art Society. He exhibited his paintings at the “Zachęta” in Warsaw and, from 1897 to 1901, at the Society of Friends of the Fine Arts in Kraków. His painting *The Death of a Market Woman* was awarded a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. He focused primarily on landscape and battle scenes, as well as genre and historical scenes.
