The bas-relief is based on Amedeo Modigliani’s famous 1917 painting titled “Seated Nude” (French: Nu assis / English: Seated Nude).
The entire series of nudes created by Modigliani between 1916 and 1917, commissioned by his patron Léopold Zborowski, caused a massive scandal. During the artist’s first and only solo exhibition in Paris (at the Berthe Weill Gallery in 1917), the police ordered the immediate removal of the paintings from the windows on charges of public indecency.
