Woodcut; plate print: 320 × 230 mm; signed in pencil p.d.: Jan Wałach. Condition: minor soiling of the paper, no harm to the composition.
Fiddler is a 1939 woodcut by Jan Walach, belonging to that current of his work in which the artist with exceptional consistency recorded the world of a Beskid village and its people - not as a folkloristic "picture" but as a lived reality. In Walach's work, folklore is not a costume. It is a memory, an observation and a form of duration. That's why even a small woodcut like Fiddler has the weight of a cultural document - and at the same time remains a graphic work with its own discipline: synthetic, economical and based on proven woodcut technique.
