The Piotrków Narrow-Gauge Railway, built primarily to facilitate the transport of lime from Sulejów to Piotrków, contributed to the development of Sulejów’s lime industry throughout its 90-year history. It was also widely used by passengers, as it was a convenient means of transportation for people commuting daily to work or school, and during the summer vacation period, it was the preferred mode of travel for tourists vacationing along the Pilica River and in the Sulejów area. At a time when road transport was not yet as developed, it was therefore of great importance to the local community. Due to its low speed, it became the subject of jokes; for example, there was a “ban on picking mushrooms while riding.”
The monograph on the Piotrków Narrow-Gauge Railway presents the history of this railway from its establishment in 1902 until its gradual decommissioning between 2005 and 2008. Readers thus have the opportunity to take a unique historical journey on the narrow-gauge railway from Piotrków Trybunalski to Sulejów, “stopping” at successive stations. They can also learn about the rolling stock used on this railway.
A major strength of the book is its rich illustrative material. The numerous photographs, engravings, maps, and station diagrams are also of significant historical importance, as very few traces of the narrow-gauge railway remain today.
