Description: AN INTERESTING STAMP EXHIBITED IN BRUSSELS AT THE HEADQUARTERS OF A COMPANY OPERATING IN BIAŁYSTOK, WHOSE PURPOSE WAS TO BUILD AND OPERATE TRAMS IN WHAT IS NOW THE CAPITAL OF PODLASIE.
In 1893, the Białystok City Council signed a contract with Leontij Feldzer for the operation of the city’s first horse-drawn tram. In 1895, the first trams set out from the train station along Lipowa Street to Świętojańska Street. During World War I, the tram stables and depots burned down, and work began to dismantle the railroad tracks within the city limits. Trams operated in Białystok from October 1895 until 1915. In 1922, the Białystok Tramway Society was established, but trams never returned to the city’s streets. Since 1985, plans to reintroduce a tram line in Białystok have been under consideration; however, these projects have not yet been implemented, mainly for financial reasons.
