Art Gallery - The Fifth Dimension: Does the revival of glazing have its roots in hyperrealism?
Sylwia Claessen: “This is a technique used by Flemish painters—a very labor-intensive process involving painting in layers until the desired effect is achieved. It involved the use of semi-transparent pigments with low opacity (heavily diluted), which allowed for the achievement of depth in the colors. The type of medium used for diluting was usually a secret kept by the painters, one they took with them to the afterlife... Rembrandt also used this technique.”
