Soter JAXA-MAŁACHOWSKI ( 1867–1952)
Painter and outstanding marine artist, originally from the eastern borderlands. He trained at the drawing school in Odessa, then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under F. Cynk, I. Jabłoński, and W. Łuszczkiewicz. From 1894, he continued his studies at the School of Drawing and Painting in Munich. After returning to Poland, he settled permanently in Kraków, from where he moved to Zakopane for two years. He painted primarily landscapes—seascapes (from the Baltic and the Mediterranean—souvenirs from his numerous trips to Italy), views of the Tatra Mountains, nocturnes, and Kraków alleyways; he rarely painted portraits. His seascapes were the most popular. He painted in oils, watercolors, gouache, and pastels. He was a member of the TZSP in Warsaw. He participated in many exhibitions in Kraków (where he had several solo exhibitions), Warsaw, Lviv, Łódź, Poznań, and Lublin.
