Bartłomiej Kownacki (b. 1978), is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he earned his diploma in the atelier of Prof. Krzysztof Wachowiak at the Faculty of Painting in 2005. Before that, he also graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun. Bartlomiej in 2006 was a finalist in the painting competition "Picture of the Year 2005", while in December 2005 he received the First Prize in the painting competition of the Franciszka Eibisch Foundation. When talking about his work, Bartlomiej uses the term "protest painting," coined by borrowing from the world of hippie protest songs. About this type of musical works the artist says: "These are very short forms with limited means of expression and strongly emphasized content. Their performer was often not even a virtuoso or a super-singer, but he still found his way into the hearts of listeners thanks to his sincerity and simplicity bordering sometimes on asceticism." The artist is a keen observer and commentator who shows that the artist in his vocation both can and should be a witness and reviewer of his times.
