Saber of a riding officer, so called "Viennese", Poland, wz 1917

saber length in scabbard 1042 mm, saber length 1000 mm, head length 855 mm, head width at base 34 mm, back thickness at base 8 mm, saber weight with sling 890 g, saber weight in scabbard 1540 g.

Hand closed, brass binding. A sigmoid, triple-barreled hilt, with elliptical whiskers. The side bails, oval in cross-section, connect with the main bail at its upper part. The mustache of the hilt is smooth, with an engraved sun motif, not seen in other sabers of this pattern. The cast shield cap with a crowned eagle passes into a braid, fixed in the socket of the hilt. The shaft of the handle is wooden, cross-notched, covered with stingray leather, laced with steel filigree. The stem of the head attached to the socket with a decorative, fluted nut. The blade is made of high quality steel, with considerable curvature, profiled on both sides in a very wide groove. The blade is double-edged, the hilt with a claw. The head was made in the well-known Viennese Fiszer company. The name "Vienna Seventeen" or "Sobieski Seventeen" was adopted from the place where it was made. On the outer side of the head an etched ornament: a heraldic cartouche under a crown with a crowned eagle and the Sobieski coat of arms, Janina. The cartouche framed by baroque etched decoration. On the inner side, running along the inscription: "VENIMUS VIDIMUS (interrupted by bust of King Jan III Sobieski) DEUS VICIT 1683". Under the cap, on both sides, a regency grille. P o c h w a s steel, with two riffles with movable butt-pieces on the back, the neck fixed in the scabbard sheath by pressing, the spur asymmetrical. Minor dents in the lower part, corrosion neutralized. Attached to the collar parts of the rapci suspension with buckles.
