relief relief on paper, 44.9 x 44.5 cm, signed in pencil p. d.: "Uecker 71" numbered l.d.: "59/250"
One of Germany's most prominent post-war artists, a key figure in the ZERO group, founded by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. He studied graphic design and painting in Wismar (1949-1953) before fleeing the GDR for West Germany, where he continued his education at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf under Otto Pankoek. His work, which began in 1956, is based on the ritualistic hammering of nails into canvas, wood or tar, creating reliefs and installations that generate dynamic fields of light and shadow. From 1961 he actively collaborated with the ZERO group, experimenting with light, movement and space in opposition to the gesture of abstract expressionism, which made him an icon of the avant-garde.
Uecker participated in documenta III, IV and VI (1964, 1968, 1977), represented Germany at the Venice Biennale (1970), received awards and decorations from the Kaiserring der Stadt Goslar (1983), Berliner Bär (B.Z.-Kulturpreis) (2006) and Künstlerpreis der Cologne Fine Art & Antiques (2011). His works, which are present in museums around the world, remain a testament to spiritual and artistic exploration in a divided Germany.
