Biography
A Polish folk painter working on glass and a state-certified ski judge. The artist was the daughter of Stanisław Zubek, a manufacturer of skis and souvenirs from the Podhale region. She graduated from the “Szarotka” middle school in Zakopane in 1939, after which she moved to Kraków. After the war, she returned to Zakopane, where she worked in the family store. Pęksowa’s artistic career began in the mid-1960s, when she first presented her works at an exhibition of folk art and souvenirs organized by the Podhalan Association. From 1968 onward, she painted on glass and was a member of the Folk Artists’ Association. Her work gained recognition, and she received numerous awards, including the Oskar Kolberg Award in 1976 for her contribution to folk culture, the title “Meritorious for National Culture” in 1986, in 1987 the St. Brother Albert Award for achievements in sacred art, and the “Gloria Artis” Gold Medal for Merit to Culture in 2008. Pęksowa had over 55 solo exhibitions and over 300 group exhibitions, both in Poland and abroad, in countries such as Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the USSR. A collection of her works is housed at the Tatra Museum in Zakopane.
