Biography
Bartek Materka’s painterly gaze is directed toward the visual adventures of everyday life, but it focuses largely on the distortions that the image of reality undergoes in our consciousness. Materka’s paintings, generally based on his own photographs, are an analysis of the visual apparatus and the influence contemporary optical technologies and image-generation methods (digital, television, microscopic, and ASCII code) have on it. Another source of inspiration for the artist is the distortion of images associated with neurological disorders. The issue of emotions tied to his personal life also constantly arises—the subjects of Materka’s paintings are generally people from his immediate circle: his wife Joanna, his son Tytus, and his friends. Often, it is precisely the emotions generated in his relationships with them that find artistic expression; under their influence, the images and depictions become distorted, discolored, blurred, and superimposed upon one another, demanding different perspectives for viewing and understanding.
