gouache on paper; 30 x 21 cm;
signed lower left: Lenica (in crayon)
Provenance:
private collection, Poland
The composition is almost entirely dominated by black, gray, and the natural color of the paper. The contrast between the massive patches and the long, thin lines is particularly interesting. The unpainted surface of the paper remains particularly important, as it lends greater intensity to every trace of the artist’s gesture. This approach to composing the work aligns well with Alfred Lenica’s interest in gestural painting and Surrealist automatism.
