Suarez Rasiel - ERIC II. The Encyclopedia of Roman Imperial Coins, Tumwater 2010, ISBN 9780976466413
1455 pages, hardcover with wrapper, A4 format, sewn book. A very detailed and clear catalog of the coins of the Roman Empire, complete with photographs of obverse and reverse types, a great help in identifying coins, especially the youngest. A monumental work, covering in one volume the minting from the first emperor Octavian Augustus to Constantine XI - the last ruler of Byzantium that is a period of about 1500 years). Each ruler has its own chapter with a photo of the statue or an engraving of the figure (if known) and even a photo from a contemporary film production. The author has developed a shorthand (abbreviated and symbolic) system for identifying coins. This system divides the coin into four parts: the bust, the inscription on the obverse, the inscription on the reverse and the reverse type (i.e., the image depicted on the reverse of the coin). Thousands of life-size color photos, as well as enlarged ones. The encyclopedia is supplemented with ways to identify coins, a table of Roman Empire coin denominations by gold, silver and bronze coins (name, metal, weight, value, period of issue and note) and examples of coins of other cultures (Greek, Roman provinces, Judea, Persia, Celts, "barbarian" and unrecognized/anonymous coins), mints, degree of rarity and current value, and a bibliography. A valuable reference tool on the minting of the Roman empire for both novice and experienced collectors. Book new, printer's condition.
