Wanda Miłaszewska’s novels enjoyed great popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. She wrote about life in the borderlands, the countryside, manor houses, and nature. After 1951, all of her books were removed from libraries and placed under censorship.
“Czarna Hańcza” is an idyllic tale of a canoeing trip the author took in late August 1929 through the waters of the Suwałki-Augustów Lake District, the Augustów Canal, and the Czarna Hańcza River. She was accompanied by Tadeusz Tomaszewski, the owner of an estate near Sokółka, to whom the writer dedicated the book.
