Rare gold issue from the reign of Alexander II.
The 5 Roubles of Alexander II continued the type introduced under Nicholas I. Beginning in 1859, however, they featured a redesigned obverse with the large coat of arms of the Russian Empire, while the reverse displayed the denomination surrounded by the inscription indicating the coin's fine gold content: "Чистаго золота 1 золотник 39 долей" ("Pure Gold – 1 Zolotnik 39 Dolyas"), equivalent to approximately 6 grams of fine gold.
The coin was struck at the St. Petersburg Mint, as indicated by the mintmark СПБ. The initials МИ refer to the mintmaster Mikhail Ilyin, who held the office between 1862 and 1866.
Gold, diameter 23 mm, weight 6.51 g
