RR-, Sigismund I the Old, Denarius 1539 M-S, Gdansk, T 20mk

A rare and sought-after Danzig denarius from 1539 with initials M-S of Maciej Schilling, one of the most prominent medal makers of the Renaissance era and, as noted by M. Gumowski, this is "the first example in our country of giving Mincer letters on a Danzig coin." An exceptionally nicely preserved piece, most denarii of this type offered on the market are very poorly preserved. An interesting denarius, valued by Tyszkiewicz at as much as 20 marks in gold.
