Antoni Potocki. Grottger. Lviv, 1931. Published and owned by H. Altenberg Bookstore, pp. VIII, 216, portrait, numerous illustrations (including 6 color plates and 2 double-page spreads), 26.5 cm, hardcover with embossing and gilt lettering. 300,-
A richly illustrated, most comprehensive, and to this day irreplaceable artistic monograph on Artur Grottger (1837–1867), an outstanding draftsman and painter whose series dedicated to the January Uprising shaped the patriotic national consciousness of many generations of Poles. The author describes the artist’s early years and his time in Lviv, Kraków, and Vienna. He devoted a separate chapter to the years 1861–1864 (“The Year Sixty-Three”).He then described his time in Venice and his “exile among his own people.” At the end, there is a list of illustrations and an extensive alphabetical index. Minor wear and soiling on the cover, an outdated ownership stamp, and a few instances of yellowing in the text; otherwise, the book is in very good condition . A nice piece.
