“Bolesław the Bold” forms a logical whole with Wyspiański’s second play—“Skałka” (published in 1907)—which directly continues and deepens the mystical and religious themes of the same conflict. This theme fascinated the artist because of his love for Wawel and the legends of Kraków. In addition to the literary text, Wyspiański himself designed the monumental, innovative costumes and set design for the premiere of this production.
A three-act drama written by Stanisław Wyspiański, which premiered on May 7, 1903, in Kraków. This work is a brilliant, modernist reckoning with one of the most famous and bloodiest conflicts in Polish history—the dispute between King Bolesław the Bold and Bishop Stanisław.
