Many - among them Vladimir Nabokov and G.K. Chesterton - call "Solitude" the best and most mature novel by Charles Dickens, and Stephen King counts it among his ten favorite books.
First of all, it is a story based on real court cases about the ruthless operation of the absurd British law, however, the women's fate is in the foreground. The introduction of chapters written from the perspective of Esther Summerson, an orphan from the lowlands of society, is a highly innovative ploy in Victorian prose.
