Signed on the bottom in two places with the imprint of the factory (Triangle and on the sides "C and W" underneath the inscription "WARSAW") and handwritten signature of the author of the figure: J. Biernacki.
Very good condition with minus - a sizable crack can be seen, created when the sculpture was fired in the studio - an old factory defect.
There are no other damages or repairs.
UNIQUE. From the literature we know that author's works of several Warsaw artists were made in the atelier, but this is the first time I have personally encountered such a sculpture. This is because products from this atelier rarely appear on the market, customarily majolica vases with characteristic decoration and colors, and author's works have not been available before. In this case, this is a one-off large sculpture. A treat for collectors. The value is undoubtedly museum-quality.
History of the Czechowski-Wojnacki Ceramic Studio
In 1917, a stove maker Andrzej Wojnacki, a long-time employee of Stanislaw Jagmin, established a ceramic studio in Obory near Warsaw. It was moved in 1918 to Warsaw, to Jagmin's former studio, where he ran it jointly with Kazimierz Czechowski - a sculptor, a student of Konstanty Laszczka at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, he also studied with Jagmin in Nieborów and in Vienna, Prague and Germany. He was the author of the first ceramics textbook in Polish in 1918. They made decorative majolica, referring in form and decoration to the products of the Belvedere and Nieborów Manufactory and drawing on folk art. After Wojnacki's death in 1921, Czechowski ran the workshop independently, employing numerous painters and sculptors. The studio existed until 1931 (album note: Bożena Kostuch, Ceramics from the First Half of the 20th Century, Cracow, 2001).
Jan Antoni Biernacki (born 1879 in Warsaw, died September 25, 1930 in Otwock) - Polish sculptor, medalist and draughtsman. He studied painting from 1894-1900 at the Warsaw Drawing School in the studios of Wojciech Gerson, Adam Badowski and Jan Kauzik. At the same time he studied sculpture with Antoni Olesinski (1855-1904), the author of many tombstones in the Powązki cemetery. He continued his studies 1903-1909 in Italy and Paris. After returning to Warsaw, he established his own studio, and in 1919 was appointed professor of modeling at the City School of Decorative Arts. He also became curator of the State Art Collections. From 1895 he participated in exhibitions of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In May 1921, a monument to Napoleon Bonaparte was unveiled in Warsaw's Warecki Square (renamed Napoleon Square). The monument lasted only two years and was replaced by a bust chiseled by Michal Kamienski set up at 79 Koszykowa Street, on the grounds of the Higher School of War. He was mainly engaged in portrait and animalistic sculpture.
