[Czartoryski] – A small box from the workshop in Żurawno. 1930s.
Alabaster; diameter 6.5 cm
A label on the bottom reads: “Żurawno X. Czartoryskich” (with a ducal crown in the center). Żurawo, today a village in Ukraine, was once a small town on the Dniester River in the Lviv Oblast. It was the birthplace of Mikołaj Rej and the site of Jan III Sobieski’s victorious battle against the Turks in 1676. The town belonged, among others, to the Żółkiewski, Sapieha, Leszczyński, Poniatowski, and Tyszkiewicz families, and in the 19th century to the Skrzyński family. In 1917, Helena Skrzyńska married Kazimierz Jerzy Czartoryski, who expanded the local mine and factory producing alabaster goods, which gained recognition throughout Poland and and in 1938, an award at the Paris Exposition. Building and decorative elements were produced here, as well as fine goods (jewelry boxes, figurines, small vases). In very good condition.
