Jozef MĄCZYŃSKI
1871 Częstochowa - 1957 Częstochowa
Initially he studied painting with his father Mateuszaw Czestochowa, and from 1889 at the Drawing Class of Wojciech Gerson in Warsaw. Thanks to scholarships he won, he continued his artistic education in Paris (1898/99) under Paul Laurens and his son Jean Pierre, and at the Akademie Vitti under Rafael Collin. He also visited Rome, Florence and stayed in Capri and Brittany. After returning to Poland around 1902, he settled in Warsaw, where he ran his own studio. After his father's death in 1913, he settled permanently in Czestochowa, and from then on took a less active part in artistic life - including working as a drawing teacher. For a short period around 1900 he worked under the influence of Symbolism, and around 1902 he painted almost exclusively landscapes. He exhibited a lot in the Warsaw Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts and in the Salon of Aleksander Krywult, also in Czestochowa and Katowice.
