Description
Oil, canvas 69 x 52 cm Signed p.d.: Emilia Reichel / 1862
Emilia REICHEL
Painter descended from a family of medalists of that name. Jan Jakub Reichel was active in the late 18th century at the court of King Stanislaw August. Emilia is probably his granddaughter, the daughter of Karl Christian, who was active in Irkutsk (from around 1840), where he came with his many children. The painting of the beggar woman follows the 18th century Italian tradition of depicting old people as a particularly difficult artistic subject; Bartolomeo Nazari (1699-1758), among others, painted such images. In the nineteenth century, this academic task needed to achieve proficiency in the art of painting was solved by artists either by painting from a living model or by copying old paintings, as in the case of the image in question.
