Self-Portrait in a Green Bugatti is considered to be Lempicka's most frequently reproduced work, and is a painting that is considered iconic in the art déco style. Lempicka painted Self-Portrait in 1929 specifically commissioned by the editor of Die Dame. It was not exhibited as an independent work until 1972. When painting the picture, Tamara was probably inspired by a photograph taken by André Kertész which appeared on the cover of "Vu" magazine in 1928. It was an advertisement for a leather hat and gloves from the Hermès fashion house. Lempicka wears exactly the same accessories in her self-portrait.
