color lithograph, heavy lithographic paper; 48 x 35 cm (composition), 70 x 50 cm (sheet);
signed in pencil under composition p. d. "Chagall" and numbered in pencil "40/300".
The composition is from Chagall's "Lithographs for the Bible" series. Abraham wandered into the land of the Negeb, where, fearing for his life, he introduced Sarah as his sister. The king of Gerar, Abimelech, took Sarah for himself without knowing that she was a married woman. In a dream, God appeared to him, warning him and telling him to return Sarah to Abraham. Abimelech did so obediently, still giving Abraham sheep, cattle, slaves and a thousand pieces of silver as proof of Sarah's innocence.
