Biography
Jarosław Fliciński (b. 1963) studied at the Faculty of Architecture at Gdańsk University of Technology, and subsequently at the Faculty of Painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Fliciński’s works are mostly large-format abstract paintings created on canvas or directly on the wall, as well as spatial installations. Initially, they were characterized by a perverse, almost mathematical discipline. Since 2010, his paintings have been created almost without the use of brushes—alkyd enamels and acrylics begin to flow freely across canvases and aluminum sheets, forming organic shapes that cover the previous, geometric ones. The paints are poured onto the surfaces in stages—the composition is built up from several layers applied one on top of the other. After applying the paint, the artist lifts the surface, rotates it, and sets it down again. The compositions created in this way are the result of gravity, temperature, air movement, and the artist’s own body. Nothing here is left to chance. The artist’s latest creative phase is a fusion of his initial discipline with the later amorphous nature of form.
