This expressive red chalk study depicts the head of a man in profile, his gaze directed downwards in a moment of introspection. Executed with fluid and confident lines, the drawing captures the form and character of the subject with an economy of skill. The artist has used red chalk with later additions of white chalk highlights, which subtly define the facial features and the fall of the hair. This piece is a masterful example of draftsmanship, reflecting the rigorous study of the human form characteristic of the 17th century.
The reverse of the drawing is marked with the numbers "571" and "16" in graphite.
