Dorothy Hale was the wife of Gardiner Hale, an American artist who died in a car accident in the 1930s. Without a husband to support her, Dorothy Hale fell into financial difficulties that she was unable to solve. On the morning of October 21, 1938, she committed suicide by throwing herself through the window of her apartment in the Hampshire House building.
