Biography
From 1931 to 1937, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under, among others, Teodor Axentowicz and Xawery Dunikowski, making his debut in 1939 at an exhibition of the “Kapists” group at the Kraków Artists’ House. After World War II, he co-organized the “Young Artists” and “Modernists” circles under the leadership of Tadeusz Kantor, and in Paris he was active in the circle of Fernand Léger and the “Le Surréalisme révolutionnaire” group. Member of the Second Kraków Group. He participated in “Konfrontacje” at the Krzywe Koło gallery and in the First Biennial of Spatial Forms in Elbląg. From the late 1950s onward, he developed the concept of Ars-horme, which was ultimately formulated in a 1977 manifesto. Its foundation was a systematic analysis of universal codes of notation—from the Arabic, Aramaic, and Chinese alphabets to musical notation and other notational systems. The artist explored their morphology, function, and symbolic potential, extracting elementary structures of meaning from them. Presented in the form of palimpsestic inscriptions, most often on paper, they became a multilayered reflection on the construction of the contemporary image of reality.
