Catalog presenting 94 watercolors and 24 gouaches by Stefan Gierowski, which - parallel to oil paintings - were created over 60 years. The selection of works is an author's suggestion by Professor Gierowski himself. The catalog accompanied the exhibition "Space for Art" organized by the Artistic Agency GAP, the Nowa Huta Cultural Center and the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. For viewers who associate Professor Gierowski's achievements primarily with large-format oil paintings, it will be particularly interesting to trace how he realized the principles of his art on paper. The artist has repeatedly talked about his special attitude to watercolor - a painting technique that allows for a more personal, spontaneous expression, as well as giving the impression of a special luminosity of colors, thanks to the application of transparent paint on a white ground. These works have an autonomous character, they are not sketches or preparation for oil painting. They constitute a second - specific and very important - current in Gierowski's work. Małgorzata Mach, an art historian and critic, writes more extensively on this subject later in the album. The specificity of Stefan Gierowski's "paper" paintings is also alluded to in a personal essay by Professor Stanislaw Tabisz, rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. The album also includes an extensive conversation that Zbigniew Taranienko had with the Professor in 1981. Although published earlier, it is worth recalling, as it still constitutes one of the most important materials for learning about the artist's intellectual choices, a key to his creative ideas, as well as an invaluable aid to understanding the essence of abstract painting and painting in general. Referring to his own experience, he talks about the search for the absolute and the pursuit of truth in art as a fundamental value in the creative process.
