Jan STANISŁAWSKI

Graduated in mathematics from the University of Warsaw and the Technological Institute in St. Petersburg. He initially studied painting at the Drawing Class of W. Gerson in Warsaw, then in 1884-1885 in Paris with E. Carolus-Duran. He lived in Paris until 1895, during which time he perfected his own artistic technique and befriended J. Chelmonski. He made many trips to Italy, Spain, Austria and the Czech Republic, among others. In 1895 he stayed in Berlin and worked with W. Kossak on the panorama "Crossing the Berezina River". In 1897 he settled in Cracow, where he taught landscape painting at the Academy of Fine Arts. He introduced the method of plein-air studies, which gave rise to the development of this genre of painting in Polish art in the early 20th century. He was a co-founder of TAP "Sztuka". He was the main representative of Polish modernism. He painted small, atmospheric, synthetic landscapes with a wide spot of color. He dealt with graphics on the margins of his painting interests. He was one of the illustrators of "Chimera" and designed posters. He made mainly color lithographs, sometimes woodcuts.
