Monkeys in Japanese culture represent both linkers between the spiritual and material worlds and clever chessmen, often outsmarting humans. They are associated with wisdom, in contrast to European culture. One of the three figurines also depicts the famous three monkeys (Sanbiki no Saru). Each of them avoids evil in its own way - one doesn't see it, the second doesn't hear it, the third doesn't talk about it.
