Biography
Born in Augsburg and trained by his father Thomas Burgkmair, the painter and engraver was involved in designing woodcuts for leading presses. Between 1508 and 1519 he worked for Emperor Maximilian for whom he created woodcut prints such as: "Genealogies of the Habsburgs," "Der Weisskunig," "Der Theuerdank" and "Triumphal Procession." Together with the engraver Jost de Negker, they contributed to the invention of printing in color. Among Burgkmair's most famous paintings we can include "The Crucifixion," created for the Peutinger family, and "Esther and Ahasuerus," commissioned by Prince William IV of Bavaria.
